CBD is everywhere! People all over the world are enjoying the benefits from this incredible cannabinoid. You’ve probably heard someone rave about how their new CBD oil is helping with their mental health or maybe you’ve even come across a retailer claiming CBD helps with anxiety. But what is the science suggesting about CBD and anxiety? We still have much to learn about CBD, but the early research looks promising.
The truth is that it is too early to be sure. There have been a number of studies using human test subjects but not enough to definitively say that CBD can be used as a treatment. Retailers making these claims are usually untrustworthy and aren’t following the FDA’s guidelines for what CBD companies can and cannot say.
What is Anxiety?
Everyone gets anxiety. It is natural. If you don’t feel anxiety in a stressful situation you may be insane. When someone is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, they are feeling anxious so often that it runs their life. Over half of people with anxiety disorders are also diagnosed with depression. Anxiety is also one of the main causes for sleep issues.
CBD for Anxiety: What We Know
CBD has an effect on our bodies. This we know. CBD is much harder to prove that it’s doing something than THC. It couldn’t be more obvious if someone is high on marijuana. Because CBD isn’t intoxicating, there aren’t any tell-tale signs like blood shot eyes to prove that it’s working.
We know that CBD at least has an effect on our brains because scientists have proven the existence of an endocannabinoid system in our bodies. The ECS consists of three parts: endocannabinoids, endocannabinoid receptors, and enzymes.
THC gets users high because its chemical make-up resembles an endocannabinoid called anandamide. The THC can bind with the endocannabinoid receptors because it’s similar to the endocannabinoid.
CBD works in an indirect way. It inhibits an enzyme that slows the production of anandamide. This doesn’t get you high, but a healthy production of anandamide is correlated with mental well-being.
Although scientists believe that the endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating one’s mood through the introduction of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids, not enough clinical trials using humans exists.
For now, the FDA only allows companies selling Epidolex to make health claims. This is a drug with CBD as the active ingredient. It is used to treat seizures.
CBD For Anxiety - Recent Scientific Research
In 2019, researchers from Universities around the Denver area in Colorado did a study to find if CBD could treat anxiety and/or sleep disorders. They gave 72 patients who reported having anxiety and/or sleep disorders CBD for months and monitored the results.
The test subjects were given 25-75mg doses of CBD every day.
The dose depended on each individual’s specific needs. Some of the doses were adjusted during the study.
For patients who stated that their main concern was anxiety, they were given the CBD during the day. Those primarily concerned with sleep issues, were given the CBD at night.
After the first month about 80% of the test subjects reported a decrease in anxiety. About 67% reported an increase in sleep.
While these results are pretty incredible, there isn’t enough here for doctors to start prescribing CBD for anxiety disorders.
The researchers concluded that the results look promising, but more clinical trials need to be done.
How To Use Cbd Oil For Anxiety
If you are interested in taking CBD oil for anxiety start by finding a reputable retailer. There’s a lot of nonsense CBD companies, make sure yours has their lab tests available on their website.

Make sure you are taking CBD oil correctly. Let the oil absorb under your tongue for as long as you can. This allows the CBD to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
It’s always a good idea to start with a small dose, 10-15mg. If your body is handling the dose well, go up to 25-50mg and take consistently over weeks if not months.
Monitor your results and contact your personal physician if you feel any irregularities. CBD is safe to take at even extremely high doses but its best to be over cautious.
Using CBD for anxiety does look promising. More studies need to be done but we are just getting started with understanding the benefits of CBD.
